Hey all,

I just bought a 78 Turbo Lance II - T-tail. I'm working on my PPL, and saw this beautiful aircraft abandoned at my airport. I had no choice but to rescue it. Pre-purchase inspection seemed good enough - I saw an opportunity, so I took it.

Currently going through annual to make it airworthy again. I'm waiting on an Airtex interior to come, though I'll miss the plush purple. Maybe getting it painted, and avionics TBD. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions.

David

New to the group and new to the Forum. Bought this Ac back in October of 2025 with a fresh overhaul and new prop. Got to fly it back from Texas with my CFI son over the course of 2 days, we had a blast ( I am ATP w/13000+hrs, CFI,CFII,MEI). We flew it around the pattern on the 3rd day (short flight). On the 4th Day we were 10mi south of our home airport when the Oil Gauge went to ZERO!!!! WELCOM TO AIRCRAFT OWNERSHIP, I GUESS. LOL Long story short the install mechanics in TX mistakenly left 2 paper towels in the mag holes while installing the engine and they came apart and eventually stopped the flow of oil. Luckily we caught it right away (my son actually), and landed without incident. Engine had to be removed and sent back for re-overhaul (after only 21hrs). We had everything pulled apart, new bearings, and back to zero time specs. That was a 2 month plus process (not bad), and got the plane back for 2 days before scheduled avionics upgrades. We added the HSI, Eng monitor, and Garmin 355 gps, all worth while upgrades! While the plane was down we cleaned, waxed, added new airtex carpets. I would like to get new side panels and leather seats at some point. Right now we are just happy to have the plane back in the air flying. New engine is purring and we have already had 2 oil changes and put about 40+ hours on it.

Looking forward to flying GA again and being able to help my son build time towards his future airline aspirations.

Another fun fact about this purchase. I bought this off of Trade-a-plane down in TX, and discovered that the original owner of this particular a/c back in 1972 was Charles J Colgan/Colgan Airways......MY FIRST BOSS AT THE AIRLINES!!!! Talk about a small world moment. After 911 Colgan air was my first airline gig and now I am flying around my boss's old plane, lol.....Let's not talk about the price I paid vs what he paid back in 1972.

Hope to learn a lot from this group and happy to on board!!!

Steven

Howdy, new to the thread and thought I'd share my 140. It is my first plane and my family and I have traveled in it a fair amount since getting my license (about 130 hrs in 1.5 years). AP/IA located in Portland, TN so maintenance is easy for me and I know these planes well. I'll get a better picture soon.

Hi everyone, we just got the word we officially got her! 1963 Piper Cherokee 180! So happy to be part of the group. We are going through major upgrades before we bring her home. We are completely redoing the panel, garmin g5’s, another garmin nav/com, garmin 430, and a garmin 255 so we can lose all the cdi’s. Looking forward to interacting with everyone. I tried putting some pics in but they wouldn’t load. We are also documenting it all via video on YouTube but don’t want to violate any rules by posting the vid. Can’t wait to meet everyone!

Tom

Hello everyone.

I just joined and want to say hello.

I'm very new to Pipers, I cut my teeth back in the late '70s in Cessna's.

Joined the Air Force and flew heavy's for 8 years, and on to the Airlines for 33 years.

Then age 65 hit and retirement.

Now it was time to get back to my roots. I have a good friend with an Archer who is also an instructor. He took on the near impossible task of re-teaching me how to fly SEL again. I really liked how the Archer flew so when it was time to buy a plane I wanted a Piper.

This Cherokee 140 kind of fell into my lap while I was looking. It's at my local airport and I was able to keep in on the same tie down as the previous owner.

I've flown it 75 hours in the 3 1/2 months I've owned it.

Just did the 1st oil change, I upgraded the old TKM radio to a Garmin GTR 205.

Maybe next year I'll look into starting some panel upgrades, maybe not.

TTAF around 6400 and around 630 since overhaul in 2005.

Old school, but that's what I wanted. For now.

After decades of mostly IFR flying it's a joy to just decide to go

for a flight with no real plan or mission.

The plane is tied down at KLWM, Lawrence Muni, 7 minutes from my house.

Looking for a hanger, but they are scarce at LWM.

One glitch is the pilot side fresh air vent pops open with the airflow. Fine in the summer, but now that fall is here its cold. I have it taped closed for now, but it will need to be addressed.

As I've said I'm new to the Cherokee, any tips, tricks, suggestions are welcome.

Hello everyone, I’m having a bit of a starting problem on my 1965 Cherokee 180c. We have replaced the master and starting solenoids. It’s got a new battery that’s only about 2 months old. We also just replaced the aluminum wires with new copper ones. After all that, the plane still takes about 4 tries to start. I’m not sure what to do now. If anyone has any suggestions or insight of what the problem might be, I’m all hears. Thank you

Hi All, some what new to this. We recently acquired a Piper 6XTC as they are now known. Very nice airplane, now getting a face lift to all new Avidyne avionic, including two IFD440s to replace older Garmin 430s. Not really happy with Avidyne's customer service as the replacement of the PFD is taking 4 weeks, but that's the way it goes.

We enjoy flying on simple two day trips with friends or the occasional 3-4 day ones to go to Napa, Texas or other destination spots. Be happy for to hear any suggestions. We are based in Glendale AZ,

Cheers,

Dale & Val

Pre-buy came back with minor gripes. Needed new tires and nose strut serviced, so seller knocked off $1500 but was sold with fresh annual and IFR certification. Also turned up some interesting avionics history. It has the servos for autopilot, it had a 430 at one time and then a KLN90 which prior owner reported smelling smoke coming from it so pulled the breaker and had it removed. Plan to use for CPL training and for my wife to get her PPL and do some cross country flying especially after she retires as well. Since it has fresh IFR cert I'm not going to do anything with the panel for a couple years. Want to get a good idea of what exactly I want and where.

Unfortunately it will be next week before I'll be able to take her up until next week because of weather.

I bought this plane back in 2016 and it's been a labor of love to bring it back in the air after a decade sitting. Every inch of this plane has been gone through. I have pages of updates/repairs/STC's and the invoices to match! All of the hundreds of hours getting to this point has been a blast. I also own a 1966 Cessna 150F C-FJNE. I have to give thanks to my wife Paula and my two daughters (Jenna and Megan) for encouraging me to get back into the pilots seat after a 30 year hiatus and ongoing support. Really!?

1969 Cherokee 180D - 2188R, who we affectionately refer to as just "Romeo". Started my piloting journey at 15 in the farm fields of Lancaster PA, and after a short 15 year hiatus, I got back into it on the other side of the state and achieved my PPL + IR. Have dreamed of owning since my first flight as a teenager, and was able to make that dream a reality a little over a year ago with the purchase of 2188R.

Spent the last year learning the airframe inside and out: Started with an interior restoration of the side panels and some plastics, had a small detour that resulted in a newly rebuilt carburetor, and ended with removing the vacuum system, adding two GI275s, a GNS 530W, new Audio panel, and much more. I enjoyed working on it almost as much as flying it (almost). I plan to make a separate post about the interior restoration at some point when I have some more time.

The paint is from 1999, so it could use some touching up, but I haven't seen a plane with more beauty since I bought it.

Looking forward to connecting with you all, learning from the group, and making some new flying friends.

Hello, I'm new to the forum and mainly fly a 1974 PA28-151 warrior, which is owned by the Portsmouth Flying Club in Portsmouth, NH, of which I'm a member and the Maintenance Officer. She's a great flying girl and as you can see she looks good from far, but far from good. Last year we upgraded electronics substantially with a new GTN650xi, 2 GI275's, new GTX354 xponder and GMA345 audio interface with all the new antennas and removal of the vacuum system etc. For this year's upgrades, we've just ordered a whole new interior and will be installing it over the next 2 months as all the parts come in.

I'm an A&P who mainly works on big jets, but am loving learning about little GA planes. I'd love to talk with others who work on their own warriors.

Later, Brian

Hello-- glad to swap thoughts / learnings with anyone in the Piper Cherokee 235 community. I've had N16371 for 1.5 years now and absolutely love it. Based in Chicago area and we make trips to East coast, Florida, TX, etc. regularly. Can't believe I can take 84 gals of gas + 853lbs or people/baggage.

I've redone my interior (airtex) and have been fighting panel lighting gremlins for a while. Otherwise, everything has been in great shape. I'm very interested in learning more about quirks and best practices so please share.

How's it going!

I'm from Ontario, Canada, and this is my 1969 Piper PA-28R-200—an Arrow ONE, thank you very much. The previous owner took amazing care of it from 1999 until selling it to us last year. The paint was redone in 2012, but it still looks brand new. He was a classic car geek and poured just as much love into this plane as his collection on four wheels. We bought it with less than 100 hours on the prop and less than 350 on the engine. The amazing thing is that the engine is not a rebuild. The previous owner was friends with the president of Lycoming Canada and scored a 100% new parts engine for the plane.

I got signed off as a commercial pilot a few weeks ago and have been training on a local Seminole for my MEL. After buying this plane last year and putting 80 hours on it, sliding into that PA-44 was pretty easy. I’m just starting on my IFR.

I’m working towards a career in aviation, but I just love to fly even if I have to pay for it. Hopefully, by this time next year, I’ll be out of my IT job and in the right seat of something bigger. I’ll still fly QES on the weekends though. Aviation is my true love, and this plane is perfect for that mission.

While we were flying cross country in our Cherokee six, N8625N, to see grandkids, we stopped in Mount Vernon kmvn Illinois for fuel and lunch. A few minutes into our meal I noticed another six land. It turned out to be a very similar N8621N. We thought it was a cool photo op. Ours is a model D built late in 1970.

Just joined the POS today (that has a nice ring huh?) lol

I owned a 1980 fixed gear Saratoga for almost 10 years. Poured lots of love into it and it was a joy to fly all over the place. Lot of avionics upgrades and was a great IFR flying machine. Unfortunately lost the plane in an engine out crash this past April. Very fortunate that myself and my passenger walked away without injury but the plane was totaled after shedding it's wings when we met the end of the small cow pasture that I found within the Mark Twain National Forest. Thank goodness this just happened to be a VMC day.

Anyways, after a brief period of consideration for no longer flying, I decided I wasn't done and went shopping for a twin. A few weeks back I purchased N6030Y a 69D model Aztec and I'm loving flying it. Still working on the MEL but almost there.

Anxious to get the MEL rating and MEI (plan to do both on the same ride) and then just get back to flying.

Right now working on installing new shoulder harnesses from Alpha aviation (supposed to be delivered tomorrow) and am already thinking about the big avionics upgrades I will want. Right now the panel is very IFR capable with King HSI and dual 430W and a fully functional STEC 60-2. I just go really spoiled in the Saratoga with dual G5's, IFD550, and GFC500 AP. Right now thinking I may "go big or go home" and do a full glass panel with Garmin EIS and leave the STEC... but plan for the GFC600 when it becomes available. I might wait to do the whole panel for when the GFC 600 is approved. That decision will be determined by the shop's recommendation regarding the hassle of coming back in a second time. Sometimes if future upgrades are expected they can be planned for during the first "surgery" and the going back in can be less painful.

Anyhow, wanted to introduce myself.

Hello all,

I live just east of Salem Oregon and I found a 1941 J4E in a real barn. It has been apart since 1957 and passed around several owners in the NW before I convinced the older gentleman to part with it.

We are in the process of a full restoration but finding parts is extremely difficult. The J4E model is the only one of the J4 series to have aluminum spars and the Army Air Corps bought up many of the them from private parties to use as trainers, probably why there are only 44 registered and possibly only half of those flying.

Looking forward to the discussions and advice from forum members.
