On top of the panel

Good evening all,

probably a dumb question but in a new owner so I’m sure this won’t be the first or last.

there is fabric on top of the panel under the windscreen…for my 1966 pa28-180. Is there a hard replacement? Plastic for instance. If so what is it called? I’ve tried look for the top of the panel, glare shield, under the windscreen. Not seeing anything. I’m sure it’s just my limited knowledge and ignorance to aviation and the plane. Hope to hear from you!

thanks in advance.

  • Hi Bill;

    Not a dumb question at all. You can use felt or any other fabric, as long as you have burn certificates and your A&P signs it off. If you purchase fabric and glue from Airtex or CSC, they'll include the burn certs.

    On my plane, I stripped the fabric and glue off down to the aluminum, then prepped and painted it flat black. After 16 years it still looks great, and unlike the old fabric, has not faded one bit.

    My windshields were out, so it was an easy job.

  • Thank you Jim,

    I would probably return the arrow seat if able to use them. I was looking for a way to upgrade to the taller seat with headrests. Arrow was just the only example I could think of. Good to know about the companies. I was looking into airtex as well. Thank you so much for your input. Greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Bill;

    I was responding to your post regarding the fabric on top of the panel in front of the dash pad.

    Good luck with the seats too!

  • Sorry. Again new I’ve been asking a good bit of questions. Your comment makes even more sense Do you know of any hard molded versions like a car?the fabric in mind keeps catching everytime I clean the windscreen Was hoping someone makes a glare shield that covers the whole thing

    thanks again Sorry for the weird response

  • Hi Bill;

    No worries!

    Cross posts are not a problem.

    To answer your question, I don't know of any hard cover for sale, but you have the option of creating your own as an " Owner Produced Part". Check the regs and with your A&P.

    If you make your own cover (let's say from acrylic or Lexan), note the deformation temperature, which is where the plastic loses its rigidity and begins to sag or droop. A black dash in the sun can get over 130 - 140 degrees.

    Now you can see why I just went with flat black paint. No fabric, no glue, easy to clean, easy to touch up if needed.
