PA24 checkout for insurance

Hi, i want to have a checkout in a PA24. Considering buying one. Insurance requires 5 hours of instruction. Does anyone know of anyone that has a Commanche and can do a checkout inNorth or South Carolina? Would like to do a checkout before writing the bigger check lol!

  • I am impressed that insurance only wants 5 hours as it is common to see twice that amount (or more) as a requirement to carry passengers / solo.

Am curious, is the goal to find out whether a 24 is the right platform before paying for a 24, or is the goal to avoid a larger insurance premium for lacking the 5 hours? If the latter, something tells me that the premium might not change after the 5 hours.

  • Hi Jacob:

in answer to your first question, yes I would like to fly a PA24 to be sure I am comfortable before writing a $100k+ check. I am sure I will be just fine but nothing like buyers remorse.

your second question. I need to preface it with hours. I am a 1200 hour pilot, 250 hours in complex aircraft. Mostly multi engine. Mostly a Baron, Aztec and Seneca. I have owned and fly a Piper Cherokee 180 with a constant speed prop for 10 years. I say about 500 hours are in my Cherokee. I M COMING close to age 70 so I want to go through my plane bucket list before it is too late. I always wanted a Commnche nice I was 11 years old. I was born and raised in Williamsport PA. I toured the Lock Haven plant when I was 12years old. About 2 years before the flood. I know a long answer but hours, age factor into it. The insurance company dinged me for no hours in type. So need the Comanche time. 1 insurance quoted $3900/yr with 5 hours, another $3300with 10 hours. So yes, 10 hours is more the norm. Does this help?
