The Piper pumpkin project was very basic and a lot of fun.
My wife field dressed the pumpkin and cleaned the seeds. We have roasted pumpkin seeds to snack on tonight.
The only tool I used was a paring knife from the kitchen. I originally made a stencil for the layout, but it didn't work. I wound up sketching the layout on the pumpkin with a Sharpie, then freehand cut it out with the paring knife. Total time was about 2 hours.
Wish I had a cool story like "I put the pumpkin through a laser printer, then carved it with a 3 axis CNC mill linked to the latest CAD/CAM system", but I don't. It was about as low tech as a slide rule and a drafting board, but I think it turned out decent. Come to think of it, the SR-71 was designed with slide rules and drafting boards, and it turned out decent too. 🤣
