PA28-140 FWD Wing Spar Inspection

I am attempting to inspect the forward wing spar fitting per SB1400B. The SB states to gain access to the forward wing spar fitting is through the lower forward cabin air vent. I can not see how this is accomplished, has anyone attempted to gain access through this air vent?? THANKS

  • The forward air vent in the cabin, vents into the leading edge chamber of the wing. So by disassembling the vent on the inside ideally you should be able to use a flashlight and mirror to look at the riveted plate to the forward spar area. Obviously a good borescope would work wonders. Actually you could probably use a 4 mm or smaller and shove it through the air vent in the leading edge to inspect that complete inboard section.

Personally while the intent of the service bullet make sense it is complete overkill to do it on a aircraft that you know you have no corrosion issues like on the aft spar attach areas underneath the carry through area or any other steel parts that may be subject to corrosion due to environmental issues.

If you or anybody does find some corrosion issues it would be great to have photos posted on site here for other members.
