LED vs. HID Landing Lights

I am not very informed on these technologies. Does anyone have any thoughts on the pro's and con's of these landing lights, i.e., which provides best lighting, lifetime, power. etc.? Are any of them direct replacements for GE 4509 cowling and wingtip lights?

I would appreciate your thoughts on this subject.

Thank you very much.

  • No-one yet has a FAA PMA approved LED landing/taxi light.

The HID are great but REALLY expensive. I'm waiting for LED.

  • Thanks everyone for the info. Very helpful.
  • J.F.---I leave my HID light on when I'm within high density (for Colorado) traffic areas and have never had any static or other issues.

I will go with LED lights. They are bright and save some energy too
  • LED is the only way to go! They don't overheat which was a problem on my 231 Mooney. The draw 1/8 th the amps of the old style. This makes it easy on the electrical system and alternator . I have left mine on for 1 1/2 hr twice with no issues( I will turn my wing tip LED on in heavy traffic areas).
