Does anyone fly into Asheville (KAVL) regularly?

Hi eveyone.
I'll be flying into Asheville (KAVL) in 3 weeks. It's in a valley. Are there any particular quirks I should look out for during approach and landing, ie funny drafts coming off the mountains? Looking forward to seeing fall colors again. My kids have never seen it growing up in Florida.

  • Not really. ILS approaches to both ends. If you come in VFR be ready for the chop and drop. They will keep you pretty high until you are clear of terrain or have everything in sight.
  • I'll be filing IFR. I took a simulated flight to both ends of the runway with my G500 simulator. The runway is in a valley. As I recall, the MSL altitide at the FAF is 4000ft. The airport is approximately 2200 ft. ASL.
