Whale watching from plane? Monterey, CA

Has anyone tried whale watching from your plane? We are flying from Modesto to Watsonville for an early valentine's lunch today, and they are seeing lots of whales off of Monterey. They saw a pod of 40 killer whales yesterday. Here is a link showing what they see everyday: http://www.montereybaywhalewatch.com/sighting.htm If you have done this, at what altitude did you fly to spot the whales? I know that over the water you should be high enough to glide to land, but anything else I should know?

Thanks,

  • That sounds pretty cool....if anyone has done it, I'd like to hear about it. How far off the coast are they?
  • Watch out for maintaining legal distance from whales. You can be sited. There are federal laws concerning how close you can get. Not FAA laws but protection as a marine mammal (them, not you).
