Near-current cost of S-TEC 30 ALT installation

I'm looking at adding the S-Tec 30 ALT to my Piper Autocontrol III. I was surprised when the avionics shop gave me a quote of over $9k installed. Has this autopilot really gone up that much over the past decade (I've seen discussions here of under $5k installed from a few years back).

Or...maybe I should be looking for another shop?

Thanks!

  • If you already have electric trim, there are add on systems that are about $1600 for the parts and there really is not much to putting them in. If you do not have the electric trim it can get much more expensive.

I do have electric trim on my yoke.
  • You are probably aware of the list pricing for the S-Tec products:

I think it was last year, S-Tec were doing some promotion on their autopilots around Oshkosh timeframe - it might be worth the wait?
Hopefully there will be some more competition in the autopilot market. Avidyne seems to show some promise with their DFC series. It appears that they are slowly adding additional type certificates to their approved installation lists. Perhaps we can hope for a PA-28/32/34 approval soon too?
