Vaccum Pump Shaft Seal Orientation

While changing a vacuum pump I had a look in at the seal (STD-208) for the drive shaft. I'm thinking now that it was installed backwards. Wish I had a picture, but it's all sealed up now. I'm suspecting I'm leaking some oil through there and want to get it fixed before I take out another pump. Can anyone tell me the correct orientation of that seal? I was installed so that the flat side is toward the engine.

  • It is backwards. The side with the lip and open area goes in. Very easy to change if the pump is off
