Comanche landing gear

I'm looking at a first airplane. I live out west and would like to do some unimproved strips for camping etc. Not bush flying, just dirt strips similar to Negrito in NM. People take in Cherokees, 182s etc.

How would a comanche's gear handle this? Prop clearance doesn't appear to be an issue as the Comanche has more clearance than the 182. I've heard the gear is finicky on comanches, is this true. I just find it hard to believe that a 1959 aircraft is a hard surface only aircraft.

  • My family used to have a ranch in New Mexico and we used to land the family's 1965 Comanche 260 on dirt or gravel quite a bit. I don't recall there ever being a problem. Just like any of the other airplanes you mentioned there is a higher chance of picking up rock damage to the underside, the prop, etc. I would think maybe the only issue would be if you were in mud and then had trouble bringing the gear up?

Love the Comanche, it's a great airplane. Hope it works out for you!!!
