  • My first ATC assignment was Santa Monica ATCT. In the tower cab was a photo of the airport when it was first constructed and used as a manufacturing facility for Douglas. There was absolutely nothing around the airport...just wide open space on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

Now it has been so encroached on that the city of Santa Monica feels that space would be more valuable as strip malls and other real estate.

They shortened the runway to make it unusable by jets, and the airport itself will close entirely in 2028. What a shame.

  • Heard the best noise this afternoon when I got back from a local flight. Was putting up the Archer and there was a very loud prop sound from the runway. A T-6 was taking off. We have two on field and they frequently fly in tandem. Other than my Archer, that is the beautiful sound of an old radial engine.

  • I love the sound of a round engine!

  • Me too, Harley. I looked into an STC for a round engine on an Arrow but couldn't find one, lol. :) Stay warm!
