Tanis Heater “Surprise”…

Hi All,

Quick Question…

I’ve been using the Tanis Preheater in my Seneca for the past 3 years now and I really like it. I have it hooked up to the SwitchOn Remote and that works great!

Something I’ve just noticed when I ran it for the recommended full 6 hours prior to flight, and the Cowling, Cylinders and Oil are quite warm, there is a small increase in my Oil Quantity on the Dipstick.

Have any of you that use the system noticed that??

I run 6 quarts in each engine, after plugging in and turning on the Tanis for about 6 hours this past cool morning, the Dipstick read about 6 1/2 quarts! The only thing I can thinks is that warming the engine to the recommended ambient plus 60F, the oil becomes less viscous, less resistant to flow, and just “slides” back into the Oil Tank. Any chance that could happen??

Anyway, thought I’d throw that out to the group and see if there is an explanation, other then “you’re nuts”!? 😜

Thanks in Advance!

  • No, the effect is not an optical illusion. If the original measurement was taken when the engines were at a notably cooler temperature, this was physics:

1/2 quart does seem a bit high for the delta though. Perhaps (just thinking out loud) some oil from other places like the oil filter and cooler are also expanding and flowing back into the sump.

  • Hi Jacob,

    Thank You!

    That makes perfect sense!

…I learn something new or reinforce something I learned along time ago every time I come here!

    Thanks Again!
