Soundproofing/Insulation

Hi All,

I am currently restoring a 77 Archer II and seeking recommendations on both soundproofing and insulation. The cavity depth is 1.5 inches so I am considering a combination of the half inch thick Aerotex soundproofing and the one inch thick SoundEx insulation. Any recommendations or observations will be much appreciated.

Thanks,

TJ

    TJ;

    Both vendors you listed are good.

    Years ago, I installed the SoundEx kit in my plane. It definitely helped with both thermal and noise insulation. There is still noise, but you can have a non-headset conversation without shouting. Have not installed Aerotex, but have heard good reviews. I don't think you'll go wrong with either one.

    Most of the noise in our planes comes from the engine/propeller and travels through the firewall, but the firewall is one piece of the plane that you should NOT insulate. If a fire breaks out under the cowling, the firewall will get extremely hot. Foam/plastic insulation glued to the firewall will release toxic fumes into the cabin as it melts/burns. You don't need that, you'll already be busy enough.

  • Thanks, Doc, your input is much appreciated. We are not considering any modifications to the factory installed insulation on the firewall.

    Cubs or Sox?

  • Short answer: I'm more a motorsports/racing fan, but if a Chicago team makes it to the playoffs, I'll root for them!
