Overhaul Shops recommendations 0360 a4m or purchase an Overhauled exchange Engine ?

Im looking to get an overhaul/ Exchange on a 0360-A4M. I have reach out to different shops. Does any one has heard about airworx aviation in brewton alabama. How was your experience? 

Also Core Deposit? Any bad experiences with Shop charging for saying your core is not reusable and keep your Deposit?

Lastly what accessories need or parts do we need ot send back on an exchange?

    I used AirWorx when I overhauled our A4A and they were a good shop. Decent prices. I just sent in our parts for inspection though. I would check with them on what accessories.

    On another note, I received an email from AirPower that they have A4Ms in stock, ready to ship. I believe it was $51k though.

    When sending an engine out I like to use Superior, Penn Yan or Western Skyways. Never had an issue with any of those and their customer service is top notch.

    If you're in the SE, Loth Engineering (Don George) does good work at a reasonable price. Not sure what the deposit is there. We frequently use Triad Aviation/H&H Propeller in NC for engines/props. They do very good work at good prices. Engines they ask 50% deposit, props we've not had to send a deposit.

    thanks, in your experience do you think is better to overhaul the current engine or to do an exchange? what are the benefits to either/or?

    I'll let the others answer, but I went through this a while back.

    The cost of a factory zero time engine (15 yrs ago) was $1,300 to $1,500 more than a shop rebuild so it is more expensive. On the other hand, a local shop might be more flexible to work with your schedule or needs.

    I don't know what the price difference is these days, but the upside is that a factory rebuild/overhaul will have all service bulletins and/or AD's in compliance and are included in the price. Some shops charge for each compliance requirement, some don't, it depends on the shop. My understanding is that the factory will only use OEM parts, whereas a shop may use aftermarket. That could be good or bad, your mileage may vary. Finally, if you go with the zero hour factory option, you get to start a brand new engine logbook.

    My factory engine is the newer design with roller cam and lifters. It makes better power and runs smoother than the flat tappet engines even when they were new. If you have a flat tappet engine, that may be a consideration.
