The FAA has released a draft plan outlining its approach to transitioning piston aircraft from 100LL to unleaded aviation fuel and is inviting pilots, aircraft owners, and industry stakeholders to provide feedback. Developed under the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act and the EAGLE initiative, the plan aims to safely eliminate leaded avgas without disrupting general aviation operations.
While the current target for a full transition is 2030, the FAA notes that market-driven factors could shift that timeline. The draft proposes a four-phase approach, beginning with evaluating and comparing approved unleaded fuel candidates to 100LL. With three unleaded fuels currently in various stages of approval, the FAA plans to share testing results to support informed market decisions, followed by early adoption and expanded use as experience grows.
