UAvionix announced on September 13 that its latest ADS-B Out solution, tailBeacon, is now STC’d for use in certified aircraft following a successful test flight near the company’s headquarters in Montana. The initial STC covers Cessna 172 aircraft, but installation in additional models is possible using the FAA’s ADS-B Policy Memo. The memo states that installation in aircraft not on the AML can be done by an A&P/IA as long as the installation does not require airframe modification. The installation will require the completion of an FAA 337 form, but no authorized signature.
Additionally, uAvionix provided an update on manufacturing of the tailBeacon and information regarding its effect on FAA ADS-B Out rebates.
UAvionix stated that manufacturing of tailBeacon began immediately following the TSO authorization received in July, but orders were set to start shipping following the STC announcement. Customers who had reserved an FAA ADS-B Out rebate that has expired or will expire before they receive their tailBeacon are advised to contact rebates@uavionix.com with their order information and proof of the rebate expiration.
